Dealing with Grief and Loneliness
Overview
Join us on 10th December 2026, to learn more about dealing with grief, coping with loneliness and explore some strategies for working with these challenging aspects of our lives.
Grief is a natural response to loss. It's the emotional suffering people feel when something or someone you love is taken away, and often, the pain of that loss can feel overwhelming. People may experience all kinds of difficult and unexpected emotions, from shock or anger to disbelief, guilt, and profound sadness.
Grief is different for everyone, but most people would agree that dealing with loss affects your mental health. Emotions associated with grief can vary in severity and people might feel like being on an emotional rollercoaster.
The journey to the point of acceptance is different for everyone and some people may take longer to get there than others. Eventually most people are able to accept the loss and start living a normal life again but sometimes this chronic grief can develop into a mental health disorder.
We will also explore loneliness which can affect not just older people, but people of any age.
Feeling lonely isn’t in itself a mental health problem, but the two are strongly linked. Having a mental health problem can increase the risk of feeling lonely, and feeling lonely can have a negative impact on your mental health. Lonely individuals are more likely to visit their GP, use more medication, or self-medicate.
