Understanding “what matters”: A practical and personal introduction

Join us for a half-day workshop where we introduce the core knowledge, skills, and values of strengths-based and compassionate practice in social care.

We’ll help you focus on understanding what truly matters to the people you support.

You’ll explore and build on the skills you already use to form meaningful relationships, helping you apply them with greater confidence, while also learning new techniques to enhance your practice.

What we’ll cover

By the end of the session, you’ll:

  • understand the importance of identifying what matters to people with lived and living experience of social care, and why this approach is central to practice in Wales
  • explore the knowledge, skills, and values that support strengths-based conversations
  • practise using open questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries (OARS)
  • recognise common conversation traps — and learn how to avoid them
  • consider how to support people in identifying their own goals and outcomes.
