Event description

Description

Organisations can face many different endings – sharp and brutal, premature or carefully planned and premeditated – all these endings have emotional collateral damage. We are working in an environment where crises, failure and demise are everyday features. Closure, merger, downsizing, redundancy, liquidation, insolvency, administration – this is the dialect of organisational life in a recession driven economy. Such vulnerability at work creates challenges for decision making, operational and communication delivery as well as the loss and suffering of individuals involved. Death & the City offers a psychoanalytic perspective of death in organisations. It brings fresh insight into Freud’s work on death and applies this thinking to understand contemporary organisational closure and collapse.

First an anthropologist Susan Kahn now works as a consultant, coach, mediator and observer of working life. Her expertise is in the behaviour of people at work and below the surface dynamics. As a mediator she is skilled in improving working relationships and developing common understanding between parties in toxic relationships. In addition to her private clients she works as a lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London, teaching coaching and organizational psychology. A faculty member at the School of Life she works with businesses to develop their emotional intelligence. She also works as a group relations consultant, including equine coaching. Her research interests embrace leadership, change and vulnerability at work.
