DeathLand Reading Group with Rupert Callender and Jordan Baseman
Overview
The third and final DeathLand Reading Group with Rame Projects, the writer and Undertaker Rupert Callendar and the artist Jordan Baseman will take place on Saturday the 22nd of November at 11:00. This event will last approximately two hours and will be presented in two parts with a break in-between:
Part One: Rupert Callendar will present the first chapter of his book What Remains? as the focus for our discussions. Collectively we will seek one another’s opinions of this work, sharing our thoughts, feelings, responses, provocations.
Part Two: Will consist of a presentation, an artist’s talk by Jordan Baseman. Jordan will present some of the initial research behind the project DeathLand, including archival images that led to the development of the project. Jordan will discuss his inspiration for this project, an accidental occurrence that was the catalyst to this body of work. Since that surprising encounter at the Ethnographic Museum in Krakow in February 2023, DeathLand has grown, mutated and evolved into surprising shapes as the research moved from the Polish Herody Traditions of its origins to expand to themes including decomposition, time and litter-picking.
The DeathLand Reading Group Zine is an invitation to everyone who attends this event to express themselves in creating open responses to these presentations, to describe and articulate their feelings, reflections about the DeathLand Reading Group. The only real limitation being a single page of A4.
These reflections can be made during the afternoon on the 21st, notes scribbled during Rupert and Jordan’s presentations. Of course, these presentations will be a lot to take in, to feel, to process. So if you feel the urge to record any reflections that you might have after the event and in the coming days, in your own time, at your own speed, we would really welcome those contributions. Our final deadline for your contributions for the DeathLand Zine is 30th of November 2025. We will write to everyone to remind you of the deadline for your submissions so that we can compile the zine, a very simple, direct publication with no censorship and no editing. Every submission will be included, either anonymously or named. This unconventional documentation of the three events will exist as a physical photocopied publication and as a digital artefact, comprising a record of the three DeathLand Reading Group events. We will publish the zine on December 21st, 2025 for the Winter Solstice.
Death is a social process. Grief is often but not always private. The DeathLand Reading (and Publishing) Groups will be an attempt to share and present different exchanges, moments, giving space for participation and reflection.
So, please take notes, make drawings, scribble and make marks. Use one side of A4. Please sign them or leave them anonymous. Please think about it and make something later… Or not!
