Description

Debates and arguments: arguing science in the media and beyond

Aim of the day

To learn structures, principles and techniques that will allow you to debate and argue a scientific issue, on TV and radio, in a formal debate and elsewhere. This workshop will help you become a more effective advocate for your science, with practical advice on constructing and defending your argument and avoiding pitfalls.

Session information

Participants will analyse the characteristics of strong and weak debaters as they learn that it’s not just what you say but how you say it that wins an argument. We will explore different debating scenarios including TV, radio, public discussions and university debates. Through practical applications of these skills, participants will feel more confident putting themselves forward in debating situations.

Course notes and other supporting materials will be made available to participants online after the workshop.

Cost: £ 325 + VAT
