Debiasing our systems, debiasing ourselves - introduction to tackling unconscious bias

Course Content

If a pattern is observed often enough, we will start to perceive it even when it is absent. Living in this society we are frequently presented with associations between groups of people and characteristics. For example, in the tabloid media the most common word associated with ‘Muslim’ is ‘terrorist’. Unconscious bias describes the impact on our thoughts and behaviours of these repeated associations. Unlike conscious prejudice, unconscious bias is often hidden from our awareness, but still affects us in a variety of ways. In this course we will discuss the evidence of unconscious bias from a number of perspectives. We will consider how it may impact on our interactions with colleagues, service users and others. The session will also describe the steps that we can take to become more aware of potential bias and how to reduce its impact on our decisions and behaviour.

Learning objectives. By the end of the workshop delegates will be able to:

1. Define unconscious bias and describe some of the evidence for it

2. Give examples of associations and stereotypes that could negatively affect our attitudes and behaviour towards groups of people

3. Discuss possible impacts of unconscious bias on their interactions and decisions

4. Describe actions for reducing unconscious bias and its impact

Who Is The Course For?

The training is intended for anyone who is keen to promote fairness in their work (including voluntary work and faith community engagement).
