Debra Welch and Jo Melvin in Conversation, and Finissage ‘All Things Are Yours’

Date: Friday 31 May 6-8pm

Location: Chelsea Space, Chelsea College of Arts, 16 John Islip St, SW1P 4JU

We would like to invite you to join us for a conversation between artist Debra Welch with curator and writer Dr. Jo Melvin on the final day of the artist’s solo exhibition ‘All Things Are Yours’ at Chelsea Space.

‘All Things Are Yours’ brings together new video, sculptural and photographic works made by Welch over the duration of a project for which she documented her old school in Portsmouth, King Richard School (previously Pauslgrove Secondary Modern Boys & Girls School), before it was demolished in 2018.

Curator Gaia Giacomelli will welcome guests from 5:30pm. The talk will begin at 6pm.

Due to limited capacity for the talk, please ensure to book your place through the booking links provided.

The finissage drinks reception will follow the talk from 7-8pm, no booking required.

The exhibition continues Tuesday - Friday 11am-5pm until this event on Friday 31 May.

Debra Welch (b. Portsmouth, lives and works in London) works within video, printmaking and sculpture. Video works often materialise from a long period of collecting footage and whilst the subject matter itself presents the initial grounding for the work, the filming starts from an observational perspective with no pre-conceived ideas of its capture, script or outcome. This freedom within the capturing of footage allows for accidental elements to present themselves, offering new perspectives within the editing for both visual and audio. Recent residencies, solo and group exhibitions: residency at Aspex Gallery, Portsmouth (2019); Second Edition Averard Hotel, London (2016); ‘Workshop Projects’ Sugarhouse Studios, London (2016); Skirting Corners 100plus, Zurich (2014); 'The Archive of The New' film work in collaboration with Donald Smith and Bruce McLean shown at White Cube, London (2013). Debra completed her MA in 2011 at Royal College of Art, London, and her BA Fine Art (Printmaking) in 2008 from Winchester School of Art.

Jo Melvin is a curator and writer, Reader in Fine Art, Chelsea College of Arts, UAL, London and director of the Barry Flanagan Estate. She is based in London, UK. Current projects include: Language Games, Franca with Fabio Georgi Alberti and Adelaide Cioni, Cannara, PG, Italy; and Machismo, Villa Lontana, Roma with Vittoria Bonifati; forthcoming Publication Scaffold, in Dublin, Ireland with Sean Lynch and Michele Horrigan; and, Barry Flanagan retrospective at IKON Gallery Birmingham, UK.
