Event description

Description

Join us to celebrate the launch of Sawti's debut zine. The night will include poetry readings in Kiswahili, Arabic and English - alongside visuals from artists based in Tanzania, Sudan, Rwanda, the UK and elsewhere.

Sawti was founded by Sumia Jaama to connect East African poets to their counterparts in the diaspora through conversation and collaboration. The platform engages and represents a multitude of voices that represent what it means to be East African and writing today.

Featuring performances by Ada B, Eljae, and Ola Elhassan. There will also be an in-conversation with Rehema Chachage and Amaal Said, and a screening of Sawti's commissioned film.

All ticket holders who attend the event will receive a free copy of the Sawti zine.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Eljae's poetry centres on the doing of relationships, and the ways in which we construct ourselves as people. Featuring at nights such as Boomerang, Brown Sugar Movement, and Poetry and Shaah she has loved every second of her poetry career so far.

Previously published online and in collections such as, I Know Two Sudans, The Colour of Madness, and Azza fi Hawak, Eljae is excited to share with you these two pieces, on her grandmother's unnamed lessons and her own recollections of finding home in otherness. Her next step is to publish her first pamphlet, which she hopes will welcome you in to how she constructs her self.

Ada B is an R&B/Neo Soul Singer and Songwriter from East London. Her dad was her first introduction to music as he would DJ at local events. Thus exposing Ada to artists such as New Edition, Whitney Houston and Floetry at a very young age, whilst practising at home.

From there Ada B began writing in her diary; tales of her life, stories, poems and songs whilst listening to the instrumentals of some of her favourite songs. However songwriting stuck with her and she began converting a lot of her diary entries, stories and poems into full songs from the age of 9. Ada B would sing them to herself but would never share a song she made until the age of 22.

February 11th 2017, Ada B released her first single and freestyle, “What You Sayin'” which gained her, her first radio play on Reprezent Radio. After the successful release of her EP in 2018, Ada B was dubbed a timeless act and has been working hard to attain that. Currently Ada B performed in and around London gracing over 50 stages including XFactor with Stormzy, iLuvLive and O2 Academy Islington. Her songs have been featured on numerous playlists such as the MOBO Awards #TheConnect playlist and aired on stations such as Fubar Radio, Westside Radio and BBC 1Xtra to name a few.

She has successfully maneuvered her way into studios, stages and spaces with no experience or connections prior to her musical career. Hence with her new project underway and a new hunger for development Ada B is keen to grow from the girl next door to the girl who sells out tours!

Ola Elhassan is a Sudanese poet and electrical engineer. She grew up between Denmark and Sudan, and currently resides in London.

She has previously performed at Ace Hotel Shoreditch alongside Nick Makoha, Kevin Coval and Safia Elhillo at their Break Beat tour of 2018, as well as other venues including Roundhouse and the Free Word Centre.

She recently completed a writing programme for Sudanese Femmes “Azza Fi Hawak” facilitated by Safia Elhillo and Nehal El-Hadi.
