3. Case study on net zero buildings by Fernanda Amemiya, Sustainability Manager at Landsec
Sprawling cities or countryside cottages – no matter where we are in Europe, buildings surround us. They form an integral part of how we live and work. And while we might not give them too much thought in our day-to-day life, energy consumption in buildings is responsible for over 17.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Their construction is also a key driver behind demand for steel and cement, which together are responsible for another 10.2 percent of emissions.
In order to reach net zero by 2050, buildings must become carbon neutral. Hence, it is unsurprising that the decarbonisation of buildings has moved to the forefront of European policy making, with wide-ranging implications for existing and new construction.
Carbon reductions need to happen soon, as a ten-year delay would cost at least $2500 billion. Investors are in a unique position to ensure a timely transition, by putting pressure on the industry to align practices with the goals of the Paris Agreement and avoid extensive losses.
