Abstract

Tim recently spent 12 months on an RCUK Energy Programme social science policy fellowship in the Department of Energy and Climate Change looking at “Individual’s and Communities’ Energy Behaviour”. His presentation will provide a broad overview of some of the challenges that DECC is facing in addressing behaviour change, and how the Fellowship helped support the rapid development of capacity within the Department.  Following a general discussion of the way that DECC is approaching climate change, Tim will highlight and discuss key areas for DECC policy where interaction with the public is becoming a major issue.  These include:

•    Public acceptability of energy technology
•    Energy efficiency and micro-generation
•    Consumer energy information (billing, smart meters and visualisation)
•    Communication of climate change end energy issues
•    Communities and their role in all of this...

The presentation will cover a wide range of topics including technology and engineering issues, environmental governance, science communication and behaviour change.

About the speaker

Tim has a background in both social and physical sciences.  He has been working in the field of sustainability for fifteen years, primarily in air quality – but increasingly in the related areas of climate change, public health,  transport, and the built environment.  For much of this time, he has been based at the University of the West of England where he has worked very closely with Defra and the Devolved Administrations on the UK’s Local Air Quality Management process.

About the UCL Energy Institute:

Founded in June 2009, the UCL Energy Institute (UCL-Energy) was established as UCL’s response to the global challenges of mitigating climate change and providing energy security in the 21st century. UCL-Energy, which sits within the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment at UCL, brings together different perspectives, understandings and procedures in energy research, transcending the boundaries between academic disciplines. It coordinates multidisciplinary teams from across the University, with the aim of accelerating the transition to a globally sustainable energy system through world-class energy research, education and policy support. www.ucl.ac.uk/energy Follow on Twitter @ucl_energy
