Description

We at Brunel University London are delighted to host a one-day symposium to start a critical conversation on the role of "diversity" and race in higher education.

Decentring "Diversity": Practising Anti-Racism in the Global University

British higher education is undeniably shaped by whiteness and the social inequalities that this entails. These unequal relations are embedded in the university governance and in the programmes that nurture future scholars, thinkers and innovators. Although the promotion of “diversity” has increasingly become a key presence in the university vision, the structural inequalities that have prompted the call for diversity are often unrecognised and/or dismissed. This raises numerous questions about the values and aims of higher education itself.

This one-day symposium brings together scholars, professional services, students, artists, journalists and activists to address some of these questions and discuss the ideas and practices of diversity. The symposium will consider ethical and anti-racist pathways for the evolution of higher education, placing the decentring of its whiteness at the centre of the discussions. It will be of interest to everyone who believe that the university has still the potential to be the most radical space of possibility and change in society.

Confirmed speakers include Professor Kehinde Andrews (Birmingham City University, School of Social Sciences), Dr Jason Arday (Roehampton University, School of Education), Dr Suhraiya Jivraj (University of Kent, Kent Law School), Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan (Poet aliased as ‘The Brown Hijabi), Dr Sunny Singh (London Metropolitan University, School of Art, novelist and founder of the Jhalak Prize), Daniel York (actor and playwright, Forgotten).

The day will also feature practical workshops delivered by students and academics, and designed to share good practices of decentring "diversity" in curriculum content and reading lists.

We look forward to welcoming you to Brunel,

Dr Broderick Chow, Prof Sarita Malik, Dr Royona Mitra and Dr Serena Natile
