In a world awash with data, the ability to make the right decisions regarding the use of data becomes increasingly more complex and difficult. The rapid pace of the data economy creates new opportunities for advancement and challenges that are not only technical, but legal and ethical too.

Our capacity to create, collect and analyse data from disparate sources such as the environment, communications and everyday interactions, with ever greater speed and granularity, using advances such as machine learning and artificial intelligence is increasing. How can Greater Manchester use these technologies and data to move forward? This is the question that has inspired the Declaration.

As the producers and consumers of data, organisations are responsible for managing this increasingly complex environment with risks that are known and unknown. The development of Declaration for Responsible and Intelligent Data Practice acts both as a statement of intent and also a framework to enable organisations to understand and minimise risk, and use data in a more ethical and fairer way. Such a statement will enhance trust across different communities and increase an organisation’s ethical credentials

These sectoral scoping workshops are designed to understand the challenges that different sectors face, identify what a Declaration needs to cover and map out a framework that allows organisations to uphold the Declaration’s goals. It is the intention that the Declaration is both pragmatic and implementable and that ultimately can be used as a differentiator between organisations that behave ethically and those that don’t.

The workshop will take 2.5-3 hours and begin with sector-specific scene setting. This will broaden out into a group discussion regarding known and unknown risks, mitigations and present practice. Participants will then work in groups with a facilitator to identify a particular area of concern and ways to address it including best practice from other sectors and places. These will then be shared amongst the group and then expanded further.

At the end of the workshop we will have a prioritised list of topics and areas that the Declaration needs to cover that are relevant to that sector.

Help shape the future of data within Greater Manchester and beyond.
