The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine’s (LSTM) Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Team is pleased to invite you to its Black History Month 2024 flagship event. This in conversation event will feature 4 leading experts, Dr Carol Ann Dixon, Connie Bell, Janaya Pickett and Dr Martha Chinouya in conversation on the topic of 'Decolonising and Liberating the archives: Race, Health and Tropical Medicine'. The event will also include an opportunity to view LSTM's archives which are of international significance, the majority of which have never been publicly seen.

The event will be hosted at Pembroke House, Pembroke Place, L3 5PH, on the corner of Daulby Street in Liverpool City Centre, on Thursday 10th October from 17.30 until 20.30. The building is fully accessible for wheelchair users and a hearing loop is available. Any accessibility requests should be sent to samia.benbrih@lstmed.ac.uk in advance.

The event will take place in person with the option to attend online. The link for online attendance will be shared with those who have registered the week of the event. The deadline to register for the event in person or online is Tuesday 8th of October at 09:00am. If you are no longer able to attend the event, please cancel your ticket on Eventbrite in advance. 17.30 - 18.00 Welcome drinks and networking.
18.00 - 19.15 Panel event (including a 15-minute Q&A).
19.15 - 20.30 Access to LSTM's archives, networking drinks with food available (ingredient lists for food will be available on the day, however those with food allergies will be responsible for ensuring that the food available is allergy-safe).

Limited car parking will be available from 17.15 on a first-come, first-served basis. The available car park is located next door to Pembroke House, directly opposite LSTM's Mary Kingsley building and has an automatic barrier manned remotely by our Estates Team. The nearest available paid public car park is the Q-Park near the former Royal Liverpool Hospital building on Epworth St, Liverpool L6 1LY. There is also on street council car parking available within the vicinity of the venue, which should be free after 6pm but please check the council’s car parking instructions in advance.

Dr Carol Ann Dixon

Dr Carol Ann Dixon is a London-based postdoctoral scholar and education consultant, currently affiliated to Newcastle University as a visiting academic. For her doctorate she examined “The ‘othering’ of Africa and its diasporas in Western museum practices” (University of Sheffield, 2016). Carol's current research interests focus on African and Caribbean diaspora art histories and heritage, museum geographies, geography-art alignments, politically aesthetic approaches to decolonising the arts and cultural fields, and activist pedagogies in museum studies and practice. She is a co-founder and co-editor of Decolonial Dialogues (https://decolonialdialogue.wordpress.com) and blogs at https://museumgeographies.com.

Connie Bell

Connie Bell is one of the founding members of Decolonising The Archive (DTA) and University of Repair. As a Consultant, Memory Worker and Cultural Producer her work explores decolonial methodologies and memory as technology within archives.

Currently Connie's doctoral research focuses on the archives of Caribbean Theatre as potent stores of cultural memory. Connie is leading on the overarching project of building a digital Pan African Archive via DTA LIVE RADIO.

DTA explores questions such as what a Pan-African archive looks like and how the archives can be expressed within cultural frameworks. It seeks to change colonial narratives through creating critial learning spaces that support co-curation and collective repair. DTA facilitates heritage-based therapeutic interventions for people of African heritage rooted in our cultural principles and technologies.

Janaya Pickett

Janaya Pickett is a local historian, writer and facilitator, currently working at Writing on the Wall (WoW) as a Creative Heritage Manager. Janaya worked as Project Manager on WoW's Dorothy Kuya archive project as well as working on WoW's L8 Law centre archive project.

Janaya is currently an MRes student at the University of Liverpool researching post-war Black Liverpool, paticularly as it relates to women and children. As a Black Liverpudlian and 5th generation Black Brit, Janaya believes in co-curation of archives to provide communities with access to forgotten histories and to redress historical narratives used to justify the systemic oppression of marginalised peoples.

Dr Martha Chinouya

Dr Martha Chinouya is Director of Global Health Studies and a Senior Lecturer at LSTM. Martha has experience in global health practices, research and education. She is currently working as Director of online Global Health Studies. Her research has included topics relating to childhoods, migration, health and ethnicity, and she has published widely in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and notably on the topic of African diaspora in Britain.

Martha leads LSTM's decolonising education project and is passionate about decolonising global health practices, including developing innovative teaching practices for a global health workforce.
