Overview

Decolonising Postmenopause: Addressing Internalised Ageism in Therapy, A TaSC Seminar with Dr Stella Duffy

While menopause has received a huge amount of attention in the past decade, postmenopause - the rest of our lives - has largely been ignored by our ageist, misogynist and deeply pronatal culture. Further, the vast majority of menopause research to date has been on white, cisgendered, heterosexual mothers, so that learning from other cultures, other experience and other ways of being old have often been disregarded.

And yet wider research shows that many of us find deep satisfaction and thrive in postmenopause. How might we support our clients to overcome their internalised ageism so that they can approach this stage of life with greater possibility?

And might we need to address our own internalised ageism first?

Learning Objective Participants Can Expect From This Event

  • Supporting clients (and therapists) to understand their ageing as valuable despite our sociocultural inclination towards gendered ageism and misogynist pronatalism.
  • A clearer understanding of the intersectional challenges around the transition to postmenopause and ageing more generally.
  • A clearer understanding of the need for our profession to address the difficulties of ageing in an ageist culture.

Who is This Workshop Appropriate For?

  • Psychotherapists, Practicing & Trainees

How May This Workshop Impact Your Practice?

  • Usefully, I hope, especially those with little or no experience in working with ageing.
