Event description

Description

Merton Library and Heritage Service is staging a special debate as part of the BBC Civilizations festival which runs from 2 to 11 March. The festival is linked to a forthcoming television series featuring eminent historians Mary Beard, Simon Schama and David Olusoga, in a study of world culture, 50 years on from the original landmark series produced by Kenneth Clark.

As 2018 marks 100 years since British women ( albeit those aged 30 and over ) were first granted the vote, the Merton debate will consider the impact of women’s suffrage on life in the UK. Using archive film, displays and artefacts, a panel including academics, historians and community representatives will consider how much has really changed for UK women over the past century and the media portrayal of women in politics and the public eye. This free event is open to all, so why not join this lively debate and share your views on this fascinating subject.

Confirmed speakers:

Dr. Stella Moss, Lecturer in History at Royal Holloway College, University of London

Suffrage historian Kathy Atherton from Dorking Museum & Heritage Centre

Gwynne Redgers, an experienced debater from the University of the Third Age (Merton)

Amongst the topics under discussion will be:

• What has been the impact of voting rights on the lives of women and the population in general? How has the right to vote influenced women’s rights?

• What / how much has really changed over the past century in terms of the lives and experiences of women – particularly given recent revelations about the treatment of women in the film industry, education and politics?

• The role of women in the spotlight, particularly politicians – the portrayal of notable women by the media -press considerations, bullying, expectations, trolling
