Description

Deep Earth Mapping: exploring deep time through mythic embodiment in the local

The second workshop in the Grounding Wild Imagination series, Deep Earth Mapping, investigates the relationship between place, mythology and deep time, using your body as a tool through which you can deepen your experience, and connect physically to your mythic imagination.

We will explore the histories and mythology of our site, drawing on Stephen Harding and Joanna Macy’s teachings on deep time, embodied listening and storytelling techniques, and developing a personal symbolism of place that we can carry into our artistic practices. The day will be threaded with poetry and inspirational examples of ecologically engaged art.

Deep Listening through Body and Movement

The first section of the workshop will involve an introduction to Deep Listening through body and movement, this takes the practice of Deep Listening and explores our potential to listen with our entire body. It is a playful and curious practice, based around listening questions. This will involve gentle exercises drawn from Chi Gong and Tai Chi, if you feel that you might struggle with these exercises and would like further information please contact me directly.

Deep Time and Myth

The earth is roughly 4.5 million years old, this section of the workshop will explore how the geological idea of deep time has impacted on human relations to Camley Street and its other-earth inhabitants. We will look at local mythology, folklore and fairytales act as clues to the dreams of our ancestors and their relationship to this place/land, drawing on storytelling and writing techniques to investigate how our imagination might become mythically intertwined with place.

Embodying Mythic Imagination

Once we have triggered the mythic tendrils of our imagination we will take our stories out into the Natural Park, and allow our creativity to take root in the site through slow walking and spending time in meditation.

Deep Mapping

In the final part of the workshop we will collectively build a deep map of Camley Street. A deep map is a concept developed by American author William Least Heat-Moon in his book PrairyErth. This idea has been further developed by artists Brett Bloom and Nuno Sacramento. The Grounding Wild Imagination version of a deep mapping the ideas that have emerged through our day and investigation and maps them onto the site creating a shared visual map of the site.

Grounding Wild Imagination Workshop Series

The grounding wild imagination workshop series focusses on the art of caring for the environment through the practice of your creativity. Each workshop is a collaborative investigation into a different aspect of the concept of wild imagination, and how we can potentially ground this source of inspiration in and through close attention to a local site, facilitated by artist, storyteller and teacher Beckie Leach.

Other workshops in the Gounding Wild Imagination Series include.....
