A journey of species discovery: from expedition to paper

This talk will guide you through the fascinating process of deep-sea exploration — from the logistical challenges of planning and conducting expeditions, through the collection of biological samples, taxonomic identification of species, and ultimately to the formal description of new organisms. Dr Michelle Taylor is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Life Sciences at the University of Essex. Her research focuses on deep-sea ecosystems, including coral reefs, hydrothermal vents, and seamounts. Michelle is particularly interested in understanding what drives biodiversity in these environments and how we can mitigate human impacts on these vulnerable habitats.
