About this event

Upgrade presents: Deep Talk Sessions

We have so many different ways to communicate with one another in 2025, but do you ever feel that there are deeper conversations to be had? Interactions with others infused with a little more connection and depth? Or having space to talk freely, honestly about how you feel about the things that matter, without fear of being shouted down or dismissed?

This is where the Deep Talk Sessions come in.

Each session we focus on a theme, and spend a couple of hours going in deep on a topic. These are facilitated conversations - introduced and gently directed by Demis Lyall-Wilson, you'll be taken on a journey of connection and reflection with a group of strangers: people just like yourself, there to find that same space to connect, listen, and be heard.

How the sessions work:

  • We begin with an introduction to the night's theme, make some agreements about confidentiality/safety, and a quick primer about how to get the most out of the conversations.
  • After a short breath session to settle in, we'll separate into small groups for a couple of short conversational exercises to get our minds warmed up.
  • From there, we'll continue exploring the topic with increasing depth as the night progresses, either as larger group discussions, or further smaller conversation groups.
  • There'll be plenty of time for breaks, rest, and a chance to mingle, with the session designed to last about 2 hours, give or take.

These aren't lectures, or debates. They are facilitated conversations that you are very much a part of. How deep you want to go, or how much you choose to contribute is entirely up to you. The room is a safe and confidential one, designed less to ilicit big opinions, rather for you to have the time and place to explore exactly how you feel.

August 21 - "Talk: How To Feel Heard"

This session goes deep on communication itself - how we, personally, approach different types of communication, with our social, professional, and private selves, and how we relate to one another in a meaningful way in a world full of shouting and distraction.

Located just off Rose Street in central Edinburgh, admission is £8.00 - be sure to reserve your spot, as numbers will be limited.

See you there??

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to bring?

Just yourself. If you're someone who likes to jot down your thoughts, feel free to bring a notebook and pen.

I'm a little shy - is it ok if I'm not especially talkative?

Sure! You only need to participate as much as is comfortable, even if that's just listening. The intent is for a super-chilled vibe, and especially welcome those who want to use it to step a little out of their shells. Let us know if you're uncomfortable at any point, and we can shuffle the groups.

Given we are sharing our thoughts/feelings, is this a safe, confidential space?

Yes. We outline a couple of basic ground rules about confidentiality and respect at the start of the session, which everybody must gently agree to. This mutual agreement is generally enough - we're all in this together, and the folks who attend our sessions do tend to respect the boundaries.

Where can I find out more about Upgrade? Do you have a social media account I can follow?

Yes. Our new website is launching very soon, but for the moment, please follow @upgrade_talkspace over on Instagram, or @upgradetalkspace on Facebook. Instagram is our primary social media option though, so drop Demis a DM there, or email demis@upgrade.place

I heard of Upgrade because of the men's talking group. Is this event for everyone?

Yes. There are no limitations on this group whatsoever, apart from the fact that the current venue (House Of Good Vibes) does not have wheelchair access. If this affects you, do reach out and let me know - we'd keen to ensure everyone feels welcome at Upgrade events.
