Philosophy and critical thinking is at the heart of the curriculum at Gipsy Hill Federation and central to our success in achieving outstanding outcomes for our pupils. This programme is designed to help participants unpick the principles and processes of philosophy and the primary curriculum, learn about what the teaching of philosophy and critical thinking can bring to your school, and reflect on how it can be incorporated into your current practice.

It is designed for:

  • Teachers who are new to teaching philosophy who wish to consider how they might integrate it into their teaching to enhance outcomes;

  • Teachers with experience of teaching philosophy at their school who are keen to evaluate their practice and to consider how to embed philosophy teaching to improve outcomes across their school site;

  • Heads and other senior leaders who have responsibility for the strategic planning of the curriculum who wish to consider how best to integrate philosophy teaching into classrooms across their school.

 

A typical programme includes:

0830     Registration, tea and coffee, meet and treet with facilitators and participants

Morning

  • Why is philosophy so important, and what are the benefits of integrating it into the curriculum?

  • Planning outstanding philosophy sessions throughout your school: analysis of exemplars.   

  • Putting it into practice: coached observation of philosophy in action in EYFS.

  • Developing colleagues as philosophy Champions to develop practice across the school.

Afternoon

Coached observation of Philosophical Enquiry in practice by one of Gipsy Hill Federation’s Philosophy Champions and/or one of our Philosophers-in-Residence from the Philosophy Foundation. Key focus for observation include:

  • The role of the class teacher as facilitator;

  • Techniques used to keep an enquiry going;

  • Children’s application and development of critical thinking skills;

  • Dialogic talk amongst learners when engaging in philosophical discussion;

  • Deepening understanding of and engagement with curriculum subjects and topics through participation in philosophical enquiry.

1450     Question and answer session, evaluation, reflection and feedback.

1500     End of programme.
