About this event

  • Event lasts 5 hours 40 minutes

Based on the Deep Time Walks, a concept created in 2007 by Dr. Stephan Harding in co-ordination with geologist Sergio Maraschin, we will be walking a 4.6km route to represent the 4.6 billion years of the Earth's geological lifespan.

Each metre pace represents a million years, with 18 'Earth station' stops where we will pause to learn about key moments in our planet's history - and to co-create a renga; a chain of haiku responding to what we experience and contemplate as we walk.

You will also be invited to join in simple guided movement activities designed to connect us to our bodies, each other and our living planet as we take time to open our awareness to our surroundings.

Our walk starts next to the arches at Saltburn train station at 10.20am, and will finish at Saltburn Woodland Valley Centre at approximately 4pm.

Access - please note that this walk covers a wide variety of terrain, from pavement to beach to mud path, and is only suitable for people with a good level of mobility and fitness. We regret that it is not suitable for those using mobility aids, although walkers who use hiking poles are welcome to bring them. Participants are asked to take responsibility for their health and safety at all times by wearing shoes suitable for mixed terrain walking, and by taking care on un-surfaced or uneven paths.

There are two loops within the walk that feature short but relatively steep upward climbs. It is possible for participants to sit out these short loops if necessary; we will provide information and writing resources to anyone taking time out at these stages.

Cover and weather - this should be considered an outdoor event! We will end up under cover at a comfortable venue with tea and coffee facilities, but we will be walking, talking, and composing our poetry outdoors. Please be prepared for the weather, and for some time sitting on the ground or beach.

Toilets and refreshments - there are multiple opportunities to use public toilets along the route, and multiple cafes and stalls offering refreshments. We will stop for lunch at the Cat Nab picnic area entrance to Saltbun Woodland Valley - please bring a picnic lunch with you. Tea, coffee and cake will be provided at the end of our walk, at the Woodland Valley Centre.

Parking and public transport - the walk is timed to start just after the arrival of the 10.18am train from Middlesbrough. People driving can acess free parking on Marine Parade, or along Glenside/Albert Terrace would be closest to the end of the walk.

Because this is not a circular walk, Kirsten will be parked at the final venue and able to give lifts back to the train station if needed.
