London, United Kingdom
Deep Water Solo Exeter will be the UK's first inland deep water solo competition. The event will take place in Exeter's canal basin, which is situated next to the Quay Climbing Centre - the host wall and event organiser. The competition wall has been designed by leading wall manufacturer, Entre-Prises UK, and will measure 7 metres high by 12 metres wide. It will have a 3 metre overhang and has been designed to enable 3 participants to compete simultaneously - adding to the visual spectacle of the event. The competition routes will be set by leading UK setters and Blokfest veterans, Gaz Parry and Mike Langley - routes will start at V3/4 and work up to V14! The wall will sit on a barge in the canal basin. The basin is faced by the Piazza Terracina, a large open space that will provide excellent viewing for supporters and spectators.
The competition will run over two days from Saturday 30th August to Sunday 31st August 2014 and is open to climbers aged 12 and upwards. There will be three competitions: Open Male (16 years and upwards); Open Female (16 years and upwards) and Under 16s. Qualifying rounds will take place on Saturday 30th August. The Semi Finals and Finals will take place on Sunday 31st August. Those who make it through to the Semi Finals will be joined by invited athletes from the UK, Europe and even the US where they will compete for a place in the Finals later that day. DWS Exeter promises to bring the best of the best in deep water solo together, for the first time in the UK, to compete.
When & Where
The Quay Climbing Centre, Exeter
Deep Water Solo Exeter 2016 is being managed and organised by The Quay Climbing Centre Exeter. The event was the brainchild of the team at the Quay who launched the inaugural competition in August 2014. The team have worked closely with Entre-Prises UK Ltd who have designed and manufactured the wall. They have also been supported by the team behind the highly successful Blokfest Competition, Gaz Parry, Mike Langley, Gav Symonds and Ben West, who have provided advice and support for the competition format and will be setting the routes for the event.
The Quay Climbing Centre opened in September 2011 and is now one of the premier climbing walls in the country as well as one of the largest in the South West. The centre is located in the heart of Exeter's quayside area, close to the city centre and less than 15 minutes from the main M5 corridor north and south. Exeter's canal basin is situated right outside the centre - making it a unique location for an inland DWS competition in the UK. The team at the Quay have over 20 years experience in the outdoor activities industry and are very excited about the prospect of continuing to grow the unique and exciting event that is DWS Exeter.
