Event description

Description

What could be better than some winter woodland fun to help us survey the deer populations in the woods?!

  • Help increase the biodiversity potential of this area and contribute to the estates monitoring systems.

  • Practice your tracks and signs Identification skills, develop understanding of deer lifecycles and woodland management techniques.

  • Hang out with groovy people, go for a couple of nice woodland walks and drink tea round the fire ...& there might even be some cake!?

No previous experience needed. We will provide you with a brief deer ID training session and give you guidance.

What we will be doing (timings are approximate!)?

  • 10am – Arrive, have a cuppa round the campfire

  • 10.30am – Welcome, Intro to site, context and wilding project

  • Intro to deer identification - tracks, feeding signs, droppings, rubs, couches

  • Intro to recording method - Walking Transect 1

  • Lunch (please bring a packed lunch)

  • Walking Transect 2

  • Offsite by 4pm latest or by the time it gets dark (you can leave earlier if you can only make part of the day)

Domestics:

We will be starting the day and having lunch at our woodland camp area. We have a composting loo (semi- built but functional!) but no indoor spaces. We will have the campfire going for warmth and hot drinks and rig shelters if it looks drizzly.

The rest of the time we will be walking transects in 2 different woodland areas (both walkable from our woodland camp) so will be a wild wee situation!. Please be prepared to be outside all day.

Children:

The day is aimed at adults and part of the estates' monitoring systems. We are happy for older children who would be interested and able to undertake these tasks to join in, with the understanding that they are the responsibility of the parent/carer. Younger children may come along to the day but they might not enjoy the activities (we leave it to parent/carers discretion) We'll basically be going on 2 long walks looking for deer signs.

Dogs:

Due to the nature of the transect activities we cannot have dogs free roaming through the transect areas (as they might trample over the deer signs before we get to them - making it harder to distinguish tracks). Dogs can attend on leads and/or left in vehicles. Please clean up after yor dog.

Location:

We will be meeting at our woodland camp area within the West Acre estate just off the Gayton Road (B1153) going North from the A47, the section of woodland is known as 'pridgeon's belt'. It is about halfway between swaffham and kings lynn. The google map is not showing the right place. We will attach a map to your booking email and on the day put out some banners/signs at the field entrance. Look for the dung beetle of 'Outrageous Nature'!

What you need to bring:

  • Warm clothing (do remember that lots of thin layers are warmer than fewer thick ones)

  • Waterproofs and sturdy waterproof footwear (like walking boots, wellies might be a good idea - the area is a WET woodland and likely to be muddy)

  • Packed lunch & drink & mug (we will provide hot drinks and maybe even some cake!)

  • Any medication you need (asthma inhalers, epi pens etc)

Contingency:

Please make sure you provide us with a mobile contact number in your booking form in case the day needs to be cancelled for any reason e.g. extreme weather. If this occurs we will text you by 8.30am on that morning.
