Description

There is no commonly accepted definition of further education with the term being used to embrace provision that ranges from foundation learning for adults to higher apprenticeships, as well as academic and vocational education for young people from age 14 onwards.

In this lecture Professor Doel will argue that this lack of definition does have consequences in terms of a lack of agency for institutions and organisations classed as FE providers, in inconstancy of Government policymaking in this area and in the resources allocated to post-16 and adult education.

He will conclude, however, that deriving an all–encompassing definition is impossible to achieve in a way that is meaningful and useful. The alternative for those providers currently classed as being a part of the FE Sector, most particularly colleges, is to more carefully define and describe their own distinct individual purpose, as an essential part of local educational and social ecosystems.

The lecture will be followed by a wine reception.

About the speaker

Martin Doel was appointed as the first Further Education Trust for Leadership Professor of Leadership in Further Education and Skills at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE) in April 2016 after having previously been the Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges (AoC) from 2008. Prior to this Martin served for 28 years in the Royal Air Force where his final appointment was as Director of Training and Education for all three Armed Services, working in the Ministry of Defence, the largest employer of apprentices in the UK.

He was appointed OBE in 1998 for his work in support of operations in the Balkans and for his contribution to Anglo-German relations and CBE in the 2016 New Year Honours for his contribution to further and higher education.

Martin’s particular research interests at the IOE are concerned with the distinctive contribution that further education can make to national prosperity and individual well-being, and the leadership challenges facing further education providers of all kinds.
