Defining the metaverse: AI-enabled ontology on the road to global standards
Overview
Get into the machine-room of metaverse development
A 90-minute working session to further develop the global metaverse ontology project
The future of the metaverse depends on shared concepts and languages. This focused online workshop will present v2 of the Metaverse Ontology project and explore integrating Metaverse ontological concepts and definitions into technical development processes.
As the metaverse matures into a global network of integrated virtual environments, terms used loosely such as like spatial computing, identity, digital assets and interoperability need to be rooted in their cultural context. Technical development environments need to synchronise smoothly together. Ontologies help with these processes.
Over 90 minutes, you’ll join a select group of industry leaders, policymakers, standards professionals and researchers to review Metaverse Ontology v2.0 - which was developed as a collaboration between the Metaverse Standards Forum, Visioning Lab, DREAMLAB and Kaiasm as a multilingual, AI-enabled glossary and connected concepts, designed to underpin regulation, interoperability and adoption across virtual environments.
Now we are working towards v3.0 as a Publicly Available Specification (PAS) with an open-source resource that can be connected via APIs.
From Workshop to Global Standards
This isn’t a webinar or a panel discussion - it’s a working session that feeds directly into international standards development.
The workshop is led by Dr Jessica Symons, previously Head of the Glossary & Ontology Taskforce at the Metaverse Standards Forum, and a member of ISO and BSI immersive technology committees.
The metaverse concepts and terminology, insights and materials captured will inform ongoing standards activity and be used to support and advocate for the creation of a BSI Publicly Available Specification (PAS) - a fast-track route for emerging technologies to achieve industry-recognised standardisation.
Your participation isn’t just discussion - it’s about actively shaping AI-enabled approaches to ontology development to underpin future standards and influence how governments, industry and regulators define, govern and build the metaverse.
AI Tools and Innovation Showcase
The workshop will include a presentation on current approaches, tools, and techniques for building and maintaining ontologies using AI and how these can support standards alignment and governance.
Bring Your Work – Contribute to a Future PAS Proposal
We’re not starting from scratch and we don’t want you to either. Participants are encouraged to bring their own glossaries, ontologies, taxonomies and related frameworks from projects, organisations and research.
All submitted materials will be analysed and integrated into source datasets to augment a new version - Metaverse Ontology v3.0 - and help us advocate for the development of a BSI PAS.
This is a rare opportunity to ensure your work directly informs the conversation shaping future formal standards - influencing how the metaverse is described, regulated and built globally.
Why Attend
Your ticket gives you more than access - it gives you influence. As a participant, you will:
- 🧭 Co-design the roadmap for Metaverse Ontology v3.0, prioritising key domains such as avatars, identity, spatial computing, interoperability and governance.
- 🤖 Explore the role of AI tools and methods in accelerating ontology development and validation.
- 🌐 Set multilingual priorities to support global adoption beyond English.
- 📜 Contribute directly to ongoing standards activity and efforts to advocate for a future BSI PAS.
- 🔑 Gain early access to draft outputs and remain part of a 12-month contributor group leading to the publication of Metaverse Ontology v3.0.
