Description

If you're interested in learning more about deliberation you've come to the right place. The Deliberation Gateway is a first port of call for those curious about deliberation.

Group decisions are difficult for any number of people—from 2 to 10 billion—and this problem faces us all.

Can there be a group consensus that doesn't sacrifice individual freedom? What happens when opinions run strong or divisions arise? What if an issue is so complex that no one person has all the information? How can a policy achieve legitimacy - is voting the only way?

Deliberations are a tool that can solve these kinds of decision making problems in communities of any kind, from clubs to corporations and villages to countries. They are finding increasingly widespread use and popularity in organizations and main stream democracies around the world.

The Deliberation Gateway meets quarterly, and in each hour long session we discuss different aspects of the process of establishing a deliberation. We will hear back from individuals who are trying to establish deliberations in their own communities to learn from their successes and failures. We will also meet people in the field who have been studying and practicing deliberations all over the U.S. and the world for quite some time. Our aim is to inspire those new to Deliberation so that you can learn about it, find out about existing organizations across the U.S. who can teach you more, and ultimately to try it out in your own community - whatever form that community takes!

In our first session on March 23rd at 11h00 CT, we will ask some simple questions about why you might want to put on a deliberation and how useful it could be. We will introduce ourselves and discuss the following questions:

What kind of deliberations are there?
What role can deliberations play in modern society?
When is it appropriate to hold a deliberation?

The future of democracy awaits your arrival!
