About this event
Deliver Sessions is back after its Summer break! Huge thanks to Zühlke, who'll be hosting this event at their offices in Piccadilly Basin and providing refreshments.
This time, we have 3 talks offering friendly advice on a range of tricky topics.
Taking the Oh S**t! Out of change
Lee Emery, Product & optimisation practice lead:
Can you recognise the difference between scope creep and positive change? Do you know when to challenge change and when to see its value?
By its nature, change is often unexpected. Lee will share some thoughts to help product and project managers plan and prepare teams and clients/sponsors for change, always trying try to avoid any ‘oh shit!’ moments.
“Good intentions, unintended consequences” - behaviour traps in delivery
Nicky Riley, Principal delivery consultant:
In delivery teams, “tried and tested” behaviours can sometimes lead to unexpected consequences. This session explores the traps we can fall into when applying successful behaviours in new contexts.
We will explore behaviour traps, why they occur and how they can lead to unexpected impacts. We will dive into a couple of the most common behaviour traps seen in delivery teams and explore the principles and tools you already have in your toolbox that can help you navigate delivery traps.
Are you technical enough?
Clare Sudbery, Samman technical coach:
How technical do technical leaders have to be? Are you worried that you’re too hands-on, or not hands-on enough? Are you exhausting yourself trying to keep up with every technical detail in your domain?
Sometimes individual contributors are promoted to leadership positions and worry that they won’t be as hands-on as they used to be. Sometimes they worry that they no longer have time to stay up to date with modern technology and / or the state of their team’s code base(s). Sometimes it’s the other way around: Somebody who has never been hands-on in the technical realm is given a leadership position, and worries they’re “not technical enough”.
This talk explores the fears many people have around technical leadership, as well as introduces several useful pieces of advice.
Takeaways:
- How to embrace the difference between individual contributor and technical leader
- How to take a step back from “knowing all the things”
- How to make the most of the knowledge and experience of your team
- How to identify when technical knowledge matters, and when it doesn’t
- How to identify the things you need to know
