About the Course
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A TWO DAY MODULE AND YOU ARE REQURED TO ATTEND ON THE 2nd & 12th March 2018.
The goal of Palliative Care course is achievement of the best quality of life for patients and their families.
This 2 day module focuses on the key practical aspects and principles of delivering quality end of life care. Subjects will be introduced using participative methods, ensuring that there will be opportunities for individual reflections and the sharing of ideas.
What will I learn?
Day 1 (2nd March 2018)
- What we mean by End of Life
- What makes a good death including advanced care planning and preferred priorities of care
- Legislation, particularly Mental capacity Act and DoLs
- Practical cares including nutrition & diet, mouth care, eye care, catheter care
- Principles and practices of communication at end of life
Day 2 (12th March 2018)
- Understanding symptom management to include the underlying causes, recognition of varying symptoms and knowing when it is appropriate to report
- Recognising a dying patient
- The role of the HCA in the last few days of life
- Changes after death and personal care after death
- Multi-disciplinary team working
- Looking after ourselves and developing resilience
Who is it for?
Health Care Assistants, Social Care & Domiciliary Carers including those working in Care Homes, Hospitals, Hospices or in the Community who are involved in supporting people with terminal illnesses.
This would also be suitable for agency staff working in a continuing care setting and Nursing staff who are new to this field or as a refresher.
What will the course look like?
The 2 day course is interactive allowing delegates to discuss their experiences and concerns in a shared group setting.
Participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

Registration commences 15 minutes prior to any of our events, in order to facilitate a prompt start. If for any reason you are delayed, please call us on 01423 879687 with an approximate time of arrival.
All food served is freshly prepared on the premises. Kindly advise us in advance of the day of any special dietary requirements.
Saint Michael’s may take photographs during courses to be used for publicity and marketing purposes. Please contact a member of the Education Team if you would not like us to use your image for these purposes.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?
The nearest train station is Hornbeam Park which is on the main Leeds to York line. The station is a 10 minute walk from the hospice and offers easy access. Alternatively, should you choose to drive there is ample car parking available at the Hospice. See hospice web site for directions.

What's the refund policy?
Your place at the event will be confirmed following receipt of your booking and fee. If a delegate cancels attendance at a study session, a refund of 80% of the invoice value will be made provided a minimum of 30 days prior notice is given. If a delegate cancels attendance at a session, a refund of 50% of the invoice value will be made, provided a between 14-29 days prior notice is given. If a delegate cancels attendance at a study session with less than 14 days notice, no refund will be given and the delegate will remain liable for the full value of the course. If a delegate fails to attend a study session and no written notice of cancellation has been provided, the delegate will remain liable for the full value of the course
