Event description

Description

Fiona Watson challenges the view that, in attempting to conquer Scotland, Edward I of England was doing something ridiculous and unprecedented. In fact, he was only doing what kings were expected to do in exactly the same way as Scottish kings and nobles had done in the defunct kingdoms of Northumbia, Strathclyde and Isles. What is more interesting is why he did not succeed in persuading enough Scottish notables that attaching themselves to him would be in their interests.
