Dementia Friends Information Session
Wed 19 July 2017, 15:00 – 16:00 BST
I write to you as a member of the community who has had the opportunity to attend a Dementia Friends Information Session through my employer. I would now like to invite you to do the same.
Following the session I attended, I decided to become a Dementia Friends Champion - which means I can now run the information sessions myself. I am not a dementia expert and simply a volunteer who wishes to raise awareness within my networks and community.
At this point it is worth clarifying what becoming a Dementia Friend means. It is not about befriending someone with Dementia. People that attend are asked to just take one small action, be that telling someone on social media they attended the course; wearing their pin they receive on the day; or being more patient in the community.
The session last approximately 45-60 minutes. I will provide information that will enable you to understand the 5 key messages the Alzheimer's Society wish to get across to the country; and also to have a greater understanding of how dementia affects someone living with it to enable people to support them more effectively. Simply, being a Dementia Friend is understanding a bit more about dementia, and the little ways you can help.
The Alzheimer's Society reached the first target of 1 million Friends by March 2015. It has now set another one of 4 million by 2020. I believe it would be amazing for you to be part of that.
