Description

Centre for Dementia Prevention Open Lecture Series

The University of Edinburgh's Centre for Open Learning and Centre for Dementia Prevention present a series of lectures to improve understanding of dementia and improve the lives of those living with or care for those with dementia.

The University of Edinburgh's Centre for Dementia Prevention combines research in science, medicine and social science to lead global efforts in preventing dementia.

This Open Lecture Series will highlight their vision to:

  • advance understanding of biomarkers in clinical and preclinical human populations

  • drive global efforts to deliver new medicines that could act before clinical symptoms of dementia appear

  • improve the experience of living with dementia by developing strategies that increase the quality of life

  • empower people to understand and protect their brain health, for a future without dementia.

Treatments for Neurodegenerative Disease

In our third lecture, Prof. Craig Ritchie and Dr Tom Russ will discuss prevention and non-pharmacological approaches to the treatment of dementia, as well as pharmacological approaches and the search for new treatments.

Prof Craig Ritchie

Prof Ritchie is Professor of the Psychiatry of Ageing at the University of Edinburgh and Director of the Centre for Dementia Prevention. He is a leading authority on clinical trials in dementia and is leading the PREVENT project; a major initiative to identify mid-life risks for later life dementia and characterize early changes of neurodegenerative disease through imaging, genetic, cognitive and biomarker analyses. He also leads the ongoing EPAD (European Prevention of Alzheimer’s Dementia) Consortium.

Dr Tom Russ

Dr Tom Russ is a senior clinical researcher interested in the epidemiology of dementia, including geographical variation in dementia, environmental risk factors, and the life course approach
