Event Details

Damian Collins, Conservative MP and chairman of the DCMS committee currently investigating online disinformation and Cambridge Analytica, will be joined for a panel discussion with Doteveryone executive chair and Twitter board member Martha Lane Fox.

In 2008, the year Barack Obama became the first social media candidate, a reported $22.25m was spent on online political ads. This sharply rose to an astonishing $1.4bn in 2016, suggesting that politicians are invested in the power of digital advertising, which potentially leaves millions vulnerable to online manipulation. As personal data is bought and resold to companies who boast about their abilities to swing elections - from American presidential races to the Brexit vote - it is clear we are entering a controversial new age of democracy.

Can policymakers keep up with the pace of technological change and ensure citizens' data rights are not endangered?

Damian Collins and Martha Lane Fox will explore the social and ethical impact of technology, the role of trust in the modern media landscape, and the extent to which political leaders should be held accountable for the spread of fake news. Further panellists to be announced shortly.
