The keynote ‘”Democracy needs you: why you should get involved in politics today” will be given by Cllr Lisa Smart, Deputy Leader of the Opposition on Stockport Council.

"Democracy is threatened whenever we take it for granted" former USA President Barack Obama says. We will look at how democracy works, why sometimes it doesn’t and how you can be part of fixing it. Remember – decisions are made by those who show up!

The event is free and open to the public. Tickets will be requested at the door and light refreshments will be available.

Cllr Lisa Smart is Deputy Leader of the Opposition on Stockport Council. She worked in the investment industry for twelve years and was Chief Executive of a charitable foundation for three years before standing for parliament in her local area. Lisa received her MBA from London Business School and has a degree in Mathematics from the University of Durham. Lisa is a Director of the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust, a Trustee of the Stockport Canal Boat Trust for Disabled People and a Local Authority Governor of a local primary school.
