Review:

A schoolgirl seeks to escape her hopelessly unemployed brother and father by leaving for college, but first she needs to raise the funds to do so. She is thwarted from securing these at almost every turn, but we see her character strengthen the more she is tested. Her main source of income comes from starring in (chaste, as she herself protests) fetish films where she crushes objects with her feet, a choice which has more complications than it at first appears.

The technical aspects are clean and fairly minimalist and the focus is given to the protagonist, rather than the side characters, which gives her room to serve her performance. In this way, it has the feeling of films such as HAPPY HOUR, and a distinct Japanese aesthetic which lightens what could be a potentially cloying premise. This is a sweet and unusual coming of age drama about a girl experiencing a number of setbacks. Typical of teen experience, few about her seem to understand her and her complexities. Those hoping that the title promises a different sort of Japanese aesthetic with lead Cocoa (Aya Kitai) stomping her way through her neighbourhood leaving rubble in her wake will no doubt be disappointed, but the film's less monstrous direction is no less satisfying to watch. / Reviewed by Rebecca Drummond Cribb
