Event description

Description

Over the past three years we have had quite a few networking and educational events where we have had the opportunity to meet all of our dentists across all the specialties. As different as each specialty is, the common recurring questions that unite you all are:

  • What is the difference between job planning and appraisal?
  • How does my PDR fit into my job planning?
  • Shouldn’t my job planning meeting and my appraisal meeting happen side by side?
  • How can the appraiser sanction the objectives if they are not my line manager or indeed from a different specialty?
  • How do I deal with a difficult appraisal?
  • The appraisal has become a tick box exercise, how can we move away from this?

Your questions on: JOB PLANNING

Job planning is recognised as an important means of linking best use of resources with quality outcomes for patients and as a useful element in service redesign. By documenting professional activity in job plans, BCHC FT can better understand its workforce capacity and match it to its patients’ needs. The purpose of this appraiser networking meeting is to equip you with all the facts regarding the linkages and differences between your appraisal and job plan. Dr Imad Soryal (Responsible Officer), Dr Doug Simkiss, (Acting Medical Director and Consultant Community Paediatrician) Karen Fields (Senior HR Advisor – Medical & Dental Staff) and Michaela Bragg (HR Business Partner – Medical and Dental Staff) will be our speakers on the day. They will be on hand to further explore how linkages between appraisal and robust job planning can better prioritise your time and also how to link your personal PDR objectives and their delivery congruently with those of the Trust.

Your questions on: A REAL ROUNDED VIEW OF AN APPRAISAL VERSUS A ROBOTIC APPRAISAL

A key objective of achieving PDR objectives is to give your patients greater confidence in you as a clinician by evidencing that you are actively keeping up to date with training and maintaining your skills and knowledge. The Trust is trying to instil a methodology which encourages looking at evidence presented by the appraisee and probing in a fashion which triangulates information to get a rounded view of the appraisee for the purpose of constructively analysing the evidence from all angles and helping the appraisee to see their strengths, weaknesses and where they are going with their career. Senior Dental Colleagues will be sharing their expertise and techniques in shaping a holistic deep dive of an appraisee during appraisal.

Your questions on: DEALING WITH A DIFFICULT APPRAISAL

A difficult appraisal often requires an appraiser to tailor their technique to the appraisee in question and ideally, much consideration should go into how the appraisee in question is likely to respond. Dr Nandan Gautam (Associate Medical Director, QEHB) will be sharing his knowledge and insight into how appraisers can help appraisees build self-awareness and how to adopt strategies which appraisers can use to engage in dialogue which will get to the root of issues and identify changes quickly as tactfully as possible.

By the end of this network, appraisers would have:

• established the commonalties and differences in job planning

• understood the continuous cycle of linking in PDR objectives

• learn how to triangulate information in appraisal to get a rounded view of the appraisee

• been educated on strategies and methods used for a difficult appraisal
