Event description

Description

In 2012 five Muslim men - Babar Ahmad, Talha Ahsan, Khalid al-Fawwaz, Adel Abdul Bary, and Abu Hamza - were extradited from Britain to the US to face terrorism-related charges. Fahad Hashmi was deported a few years before. Abid Naseer and Haroon Aswat would follow shortly. They were subject to pre-trial incarceration for up to seventeen years, police brutality, secret trials, secret evidence, long-term detention in solitary confinement, citizenship deprivation and more.

Join Nisha Kapoor, author of Deport Deprive Extradite. 21st Century State Extremism, Zahid Hussain (Manchester Muslim Writers), John Nicholson (Greater Manchester Law Society), Denise McDowell (GM Immigration Aid Unit) and Ken Fero for a discussion about Nisha’s new book published by Verso, which draws on the stories of these men as starting points to explore what they illuminate about the disciplinary features of state power and its securitising conditions.

Ken Fero's ‘The Eyes of Aliyah’ and ‘Aaden and the Spiders’ will be screened: two short films for the Deport Deprive Extradite Project which document the multiple ways in which authoritarianism is being cultivated and extended in Britain through the ongoing War on Terror.
