Overview

A facilitated workshop for YJS practitioners

Deprivation of Liberty Orders for Youth Justice Practitioners

The use of Deprivation of Liberty Orders (DoLs) made by the High Court under its inherent jurisdiction has increased by 462% over 5 years.

It is essential that youth justice practitioners have a comprehensive understanding of these orders and the significant implications they hold for children within the criminal justice system.

Following the publication of the Youth Justice Legal Centre’s (YJLC) Deprivation of Liberty Orders Legal Guide (2024), we are pleased to offer a series of expert-led, facilitated workshops designed specifically for youth justice professionals.

Learning Objectives - Participants will:

  • Develop an overview of the legal framework surrounding Deprivation of Liberty Orders;
  • Identify the distinctions between how the family justice system and the criminal justice system work with children;
  • Explore practical approaches for youth justice practitioners to support children subject to DoLs;
  • Examine the evolving legal landscape and its implications for practice;
  • Engage in structured peer-to-peer discussion to share experiences, innovation, and best practice.

Workshop Facilitator

The workshops will be facilitated by Shauneen Lambe, barrister, co-founder of Just for Kids Law, Director of the Youth Justice Legal Centre, and Coordinator of the UK-wide Child Law Network.
Ms Lambe is recognised as a leading expert in children’s law, having successfully changed the law on four occasions to improve children’s lives. She is also co-author of Youth Justice Law and Practice.
