About this event

Deputy Director Induction - 3 stage event

Welcome to the Senior Civil Service and congratulations on your new role.

We know that when individuals are promoted or recruited into the Senior Civil Service (SCS) they really appreciate the opportunity to develop a network quickly and benefit from having a safe space in which to explore what is expected of them as leaders.

Deputy Director Induction (DDI) is for new deputy directors (SCS1) who have been recently promoted (within the last six months) or who have recently completed the Civil Service Orientation.

The Leadership College for Government is running the Deputy Director Induction in three stages which will enable you to begin thinking about the knowledge, skills and networks needed to thrive in your new role. We are creating a space for you to meet with peers, build your networks, draw from the experience of others in a senior role and begin to build your understanding of being a Senior Civil Servant.

The aims of the DDI are to:

  • Welcome participants to the Senior Civil Service and celebrate their new role;
  • Provide the participants with a clear expectation of what is expected of them as deputy directors;
  • Provide essential knowledge to support for participants in their first 3-6 months in role;
  • For participants to create personal networks across the Civil Service; and
  • Provide support to new deputy directors to think about their leadership journey.

Dates for the Deputy Director Induction:

1 November 2022 from 10:00 to 12:00 - Virtual programme launch (via Microsoft teams)

1 November to 16 November 2022 - Independent online learning (via FutureLearn)

16 November to 17 November 2022 - Two day residential workshop (The location for this event is Hawkhills Emergency Planning College, York, YO61 3EG.)

Joining Instructions

After you have signed up via this Eventbrite page, we will send you a calendar invitation and, closer to the time, a resource pack, slide deck and finalised agendas for the two live events. Once you have received your calendar invitation, please book your accommodation as below.

There is no cost associated with this induction programme, however it is expected that participants will stay at Hawkhills on the night of the first day of the residential, on 16 November 2022. This will be an invaluable time for networking with peers.

You will need to book this accommodation through your own departmental booking system, by searching for The Hawkhills. When booking your accommodation you will be able to select the option for breakfast and evening meal, this will be £112. Lunch is provided by the Leadership College for Government.

We have timed the residential induction to give participants time to travel to the venue on day 1 and travel home on day 2 (day 1 starting at 11:30 and day 2 finishing at 3pm). However, some participants may still require accommodation the night before the residential or on day two of the residential, this will also be available to book through your own departmental booking system. Should you have any issues booking your accommodation, please contact The Hawkhills on 01347 821406.

We know that participants on the SCS Induction programmes really value hearing from and working with colleagues from across the Civil Service. To ensure you have the most valuable experience we only accept a maximum of four participants from any one department on each event. If the number of participants from your department booked onto this event exceeds this number, then we may contact you with alternative dates. Thank you for your understanding.

We look forward to working with you soon. Please email leadershipcollege@cabinetoffice.gov.uk if you have any questions.
