About this Event
Calling all Everton fans.
For one night only, award-winning author James Corbett will be joined by award-nominated author, Rob Sawyer, Everton historian Gavin Buckland and Everton legend Derek Temple as they reminisce about the 1960s and discuss Money Can’t Buy is Love and Blue Dragon.
When the wealthy Littlewoods corporation owner John Moores took control of Everton Football Club in 1960 it set in motion a chain of events that still affect the game in this country today. Although big clubs had spent money before, none had done so with such naked short- term ambition and a ruthlessness to succeed that sent shockwaves through the previously stagnant world of English football. Money Can’t Buy Us Love tells the tale of how Moores and manager Harry Catterick took the so-called ‘Mersey Millionaires’ to the summit of English football, in the context of the major cultural changes of the time.
Alongside them, Rob Sawyer’s kickstarter backed biography of Roy Vernon will also be discussed as Roy was seminal to the success of that team in the 60s and great team-mates of Derek. Known to always have a cigarette in his hand, even whilst showering, and using a billow pad to try and clean his nicotine stained hands, Vernon was instrumental in Everton’s success.
