Des hommes et des dieux (Of Gods and Men)
2010
Historical Drama
2 hrs Cert 15
Director: Xavier Beauvois
Starring: Lambert Wilson, Michael Lonsdale, Olivier Rabourdin
The film is a fictionalised account of real events which occurred in a Cistercian monastery in Algeria in 1996. The monks have, for many years, lived in harmony with Muslims from local villages, partly because the monks provided a free outpatients clinic. They have a quiet, supportive respect for each other’s traditions. The harmony of the relationship and the monks' personal beliefs are deeply tested when intolerant Muslim extremists become active in the areas surrounding the monastery and threaten the very core of their way of life and beliefs.
This is a severe, austere and deeply moving film shot with beautiful simplicity. It is about the question, so relevant in the world today, of how to act when life is challenged by unfathomable violence.
