Design, cut and print a stencil printed repeat floral pattern for fabric with Surface Pattern designer Megan Carter

Inspired by Megan’s own decorative floral textile prints, this one day workshop introduces you to learn the basic skills of designing and hand cutting a beautiful floral themed repeat pattern stencil design that you will print onto a prepared large cushion cover.

Drawing inspiration from Megan’s own designs and her influences, you will:

  • Be guided though the technique of drawing and designing your repeat pattern using visual inspiration.
  • Learning the technique of cutting your repeat pattern stencils and experimenting with various application techniques using eco-friendly printing inks.
  • Refine your final repeat design and technique so you are happy with a pattern that will be ready to print onto your prepared cushion cover.

Ideas\inspiration/drawings are welcome to bring along for possible starting points for your patterns

Artist bio:

Megan earned a BA Honours in Surface Pattern Design from Staffordshire University in 2000, and over the next two decades, she honed her skills as an in-house greetings card designer with Hallmark Cards and UK Greetings. After 20 years in the industry, she transitioned to freelance work, where she has spent the past five years exploring new creative opportunities and collaborating with diverse projects in design. With a deep passion for both the past and the present, Megan continues to create visually striking, timeless designs that resonate with contemporary audiences.

More recently, Megan’s creativity expanded once again when she discovered a new love for hand-stencil printed fabric designs after she took a collection of on-line courses taught by Dutch textile stencil designer Pauline Greuell. Paulines detailed teachings offered Megan a chance to develop her own unique handwriting. She quotes Pauline as the inspiration that has set this new style of working in motion.

After years of creating digital patterns, returning to a hands-on, slow-making technique has been a refreshing life giving journey. Megan’s prints are all designed and printed in her West Yorkshire studio. She works in collaboration with a local seamstress and upholsterer to create her fabric accessories and homewares.
