About the Workshop

Design Day: Friendly Spaces

Thursday 15 August 2019, 11AM-4PM

For children aged 11-15

Public spaces should be designed to bring people together and facilitate all types of communal and social activities. They are designed with people in mind but sometimes, in practice, they can create both physical and mental boundaries with the inclusion of boulders, signage or by simply not being maintained. So how can we overcome or challenge these boundaries to make the public realm more accessible?

Throughout the day, we will think creatively about shared spaces and how to incorporate the social activities we like to do, within them. Working in groups, we will develop 3D scale-models that demonstrate how we can design social and interactive spaces that remove the barriers people experience in their everyday life, to create public spaces that are truly for everyone.

This creative architecture workshop is led by artist and educator Daniel Wallis for children aged 11 to 15.

About the Workshop Series

Our Design Day workshops for ages 11-15 take architectural design a step further by providing context and knowledge of the built environment to spark creativity. Past workshops have focused on different architectural styles, small and large-scale construction methods, traditional and digital drawing techniques, architectural games and using software to design collaboratively in a shared space.

Based in London, mainly our HQ at 66 Portland Place, all participants must arrive by 11am. These workshops are led by professional educators and all materials are included in the ticket price, but lunch is not provided.

If you're under 18, tickets must be booked by a parent or guardian. Online booking in advance is essential and if we do not receive full registration information in advance of the event we cannot allow the participant to attend.

Some of our workshops involve a visit to an offsite location that is designed to enhance the learning experience and provide vital real-world context. Children are supervised by RIBA staff and volunteers at all times during such visits and location information is provided in advance.

To see other learning workshops taking place in this series, see our families and children page.
