About the workshop

Design Day: Furnish the Streets

For ages 11 to 15

9-10 April 2018

11AM – 4PM

What springs to mind when you hear the word furniture? Do you think of the interior or exterior decoration of a space? Chairs, tables and lighting are synonymous with the comfort of being indoors, but how important is it to decorate the streets?

Street furniture can define an area, and its presence doesn’t just affect it visually and physically. In this two-day workshop we will explore placemaking and how street furniture such as a bench, bike rack, bin or street lamp can improve our quality of life and impact our feelings towards and use of an area. Participants will collaborate to create a brief for a public area that they will furnish with life-size furniture. Through learning and using large-scale modelling techniques, their models will come together to furnish the street and create a more desirable public space for us to use in the same way that we would use our furniture at home.

This creative architecture workshop is led by artist and educator Daniel Wallis for children aged 11-15.

About the workshop series

Our Design Day workshops take architectural design and understanding a step further.  Past workshops have focused on different architectural styles, social housing, construction methods, traditional and digital drawing techniques, exploring light and sound, and using games such as Minecraft to design collaboratively in a shared space.

All workshops require you to drop off your child by 11am and pick up at 4pm. They are led by professional educators and all materials are included in the ticket price, but you should prepare a packed lunch for your child.  Online booking in advance is essential.

Other workshops taking place in this series this Easter holidays:
