About the Workshop

Design Day: Gimmie Shelter - Safety Structures on the Move

Friday 21 February 2020, 11AM-4PM

For children aged 11-15

Throughout history, architecture has been designed with its climate in mind. Buildings that are self-cooling in hot climates. Buildings that withstand earthquakes. Buildings that rely on solar panels. But as the world becomes more prone to extreme weather and natural disasters, architects are having to find evermore creative ways of designing buildings that work with climate change.

In this workshop, we will look at the development and use of temporary mobile structures that can be packed up and carried around by individuals to use after adverse weather or disaster situations. Working in groups, we will learn why people are displaced due extreme climates, such as floods or droughts, before focussing on modular architecture and the best materials that can be used in temporary, mobile architecture. Is it lightweight? Is it durable? Is it sustainable? Using these ideas, we will then work individually to design and construct our own modular structures.

This creative architecture workshop is led by artist educator, Daniel Wallis for children aged 11 to 15 years.

About the Workshop Series

Our Design Day workshops for ages 11-15 take architectural design a step further by providing context and knowledge of the built environment to spark creativity. Past workshops have focused on different architectural styles, small and large-scale construction methods, traditional and digital drawing techniques, architectural games and using software to design collaboratively in a shared space.

Based in London, mainly our HQ at 66 Portland Place, all participants must arrive by 11am. These workshops are led by professional educators and all materials are included in the ticket price, but lunch is not provided.

If you're under 18, tickets must be booked by a parent or guardian. Online booking in advance is essential and if we do not receive full registration information in advance of the event we cannot allow the participant to attend.

Some of our workshops involve a visit to an offsite location that is designed to enhance the learning experience and provide vital real-world context. Children are supervised by RIBA staff and volunteers at all times during such visits and location information is provided in advance.

To see other learning workshops taking place in this series, see our families and children page.
