About the Workshop

Design Day: Grimshaw Architecture's Summer School
Monday 5 to Friday 9 August, 11AM-4PM, daily
For children aged 11 to 15

Our relationship with water has spanned centuries, from the great ships that crossed the oceans to desalination plants in the middle of deserts. Built 150 years ago, the Cutty Sark ship ran on sail power and was one of the fastest ships of her time. Now the world’s only surviving tea clipper, the environment the Cutty Sark inhabits today is very different to the one she first knew. Human impact is damaging the planet and changing our climate beyond recognition. So as sea-levels continue to rise, how can we adapt and change the way we design and inhabit the world?

Join us over 5 days to explore our critical relationship with water, how we can adapt to new climates, and how this might affect the design of our future cities. We will start the week at the Cutty Sark in Greenwich (Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 August), taking inspiration from the iconic ship and its location by the River Thames. We will investigate projects that embrace and conserve water – from transportation, housing and energy generation, as well as architectural projects that successfully show what designers can achieve when working with water.

Our week will continue at the RIBA (Wednesday 7, Thursday 8, Friday 9 August) where we will collaborate to develop our ideas for new architecture that works with water. Using a range of creative techniques including drawing, model-making and presenting, we’ll turn our ideas into building designs that overcome the challenges of our changing climate.

Please note: This summer school will take place both at the Cutty Sark in Greenwich (Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 August) and the RIBA in Westminster (Wednesday 7, Thursday 8 and Friday 9 August).

This creative architecture workshop is led by architect Barbara Swierc and architectural assistant Jack Bown from Grimshaw Architects, in partnership with the Cutty Sark for children aged 11 to 15.

About the Workshop Series

Our Design Day workshops for ages 11-15 take architectural design a step further by providing context and knowledge of the built environment to spark creativity. Past workshops have focused on different architectural styles, small and large-scale construction methods, traditional and digital drawing techniques, architectural games and using software to design collaboratively in a shared space.

Based in London, mainly our HQ at 66 Portland Place, all participants must arrive by 11am. These workshops are led by professional educators and all materials are included in the ticket price, but lunch is not provided.

If you're under 18, tickets must be booked by a parent or guardian. Online booking in advance is essential and if we do not receive full registration information in advance of the event we cannot allow the participant to attend.

This course will take place across both sites at the Cutty Sark Museum in Greenwich and the RIBA in Westminster. It will also involve a visit to an offsite location that is designed to enhance the learning experience and provide vital real-world context. Children are supervised by staff and volunteers at all times during such visits and location information is provided in advance.

To see other learning workshops taking place in this series, see our families and children page.
