About the Workshop

Design Day: Street Art

Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 February 2020, 11AM-4PM, daily

For children aged 11-15

Ever wondered about how street art is made, what it means and the artists behind it? Can street art create a sense of identity? Can it create a sense of community?

Join us over two days, as we look at infamous street artists behind some of London’s famous street art. Discover how artists create murals and street art to represent the different places, spaces and people that make up the local community. Working in groups we will explore different building designs and their facades and consider the arguments for and against street art and what it means to communities and places. Then using different techniques such as paste ups and mural painting, we will be given a specific site to design and work together to create our own artistic interventions for our own imagined community.

This creative architecture workshop is led by artist educator Katie Kennedy for children aged 11 to 15 years.

About the Workshop Series

Our Design Day workshops for ages 11-15 take architectural design a step further by providing context and knowledge of the built environment to spark creativity. Past workshops have focused on different architectural styles, small and large-scale construction methods, traditional and digital drawing techniques, architectural games and using software to design collaboratively in a shared space.

Based in London, mainly our HQ at 66 Portland Place, all participants must arrive by 11am. These workshops are led by professional educators and all materials are included in the ticket price, but lunch is not provided.

If you're under 18, tickets must be booked by a parent or guardian. Online booking in advance is essential and if we do not receive full registration information in advance of the event we cannot allow the participant to attend.

Some of our workshops involve a visit to an offsite location that is designed to enhance the learning experience and provide vital real-world context. Children are supervised by RIBA staff and volunteers at all times during such visits and location information is provided in advance.

To see other learning workshops taking place in this series, see our families and children page.
