About the Workshop

Design Quest: The Children’s Green Space Manifesto

Wednesday 7 to Friday 9 August 2019, 11AM-4PM, daily

For children aged 6-10

Depending on where you live, the amount of green spaces you encounter varies, with rural areas having more open spaces than urban areas. But green spaces are of benefit to us as well as the environment as, not only does it help filter the air of pollutants, provide shade and lower temperatures, it can provide better health and wellbeing for people. So how can we create more green spaces in built up urban areas to ensure a healthier and more active lifestyle?

Join us over 3 days to tell us what green spaces you would like to see for children in cities. You will learn about greenspace policy and the different types of green spaces we can have in urban areas from parks, to roof gardens, before using your imagination to create new ideas for green spaces specifically for children.

How do green spaces affect you? What do you want from green spaces? These are some of the things you will consider as you make the choices for our future. We will create slogans, use concrete poetry techniques and paint placards that demonstrate our Children’s Green Space Manifesto before creating individual collages of green and public spaces. Bringing these collages together, we will develop ideas collectively to build large-scale group sculptures of green public spaces suitable for children.

This creative architecture workshop is led by artist and educator Daniel Wallis for children aged 6 to 10.

About the Workshop Series

For ages 6-10, our Design Quest workshops inspire younger children to use their imagination and hands-on creativity for a fun introduction to architecture. Previous workshops have seen participants create optical illusions, design sustainable dens, build stage sets, develop an animated story around a public space or assemble a house for a mouse.

Based in London, mainly our HQ at 66 Portland Place, all participants must arrive by 11am. These workshops are led by professional educators and all materials are included in the ticket price, but lunch is not provided.

If you're under 18, tickets must be booked by a parent or guardian. Online booking in advance is essential and if we do not receive full registration information in advance of the event we cannot allow the participant to attend.

Some of our workshops involve a visit to an offsite location that is designed to enhance the learning experience and provide vital real-world context. Children are supervised by RIBA staff and volunteers at all times during such visits and location information is provided in advance.

To see other learning workshops taking place in this series, see our families and children page.
