Design Roast: Making in the Museum

Public talk from Alex Flowers, V&A Team Leader of Digital Programme.

The V&A, as the national museum for art and design, is working to increase access to creative subjects and careers for young people as schools experience pressure from STEM initiatives. By exploring the context of digital creativity across education, industry and culture, the V&A’s approach to learning through making will be demonstrated through ongoing projects that seek to expand the opportunities for and diversity of young people in the creative industries.

Embracing the ethos of the maker movement and open source, the Digital Programmes team engage people with emerging digital design processes and the collections of the museum. Before the V&A he worked as an educator, developing e-learning courses before moving into the cultural sector at Museum of London. Since then, he has worked for a variety of clients including the Crafts Council, Brighton Festival and is a visiting lecturer at Institute of Education, University College London.

Alex studied History of Art at Aberystwyth University before going on to gain a MA Museums and Galleries in Education at the Institute of Education. He has published articles on gaming as well as speaking on digital culture and education at a number of conferences in the UK and internationally.

About Design Roast

The Design Roast is an open discussion group for anyone interested in creative design practices and theories of cross-disciplinarity, interactive design, new media technologies, visual communication and philosophies of the state-of-the current and future design. The Design Roast series brings together people from diverse fields and degrees of expertise, aiming to initiate discussions and debates among postgraduate students, researchers, academics, artists, theorists, designers and other creative practitioners.

Every week we'll invite alumni, industry partners and friends to come in and speak about their experience in design. This year's theme concentrates on DiD: Diversity & Inclusivity by Design

What is enabled when designers design with, and for, others?

To design inclusively is to engage people deeply throughout the design process, to share our practices and to amalgamate people’s unique knowledge into design interventions.

DiD focusing on design as a holistic action with the capacity to simultaneously engage conceptual and practical shifts that make our society a place with no boundaries.
