Event description
In this participatory workshop, step into a design thinker's shoes to face a challenge that will lead to realization of a final prototype

About this Event

Create Innovation by Involving People

Every company, small, medium and large, knows that innovation depends wholly on listening to the people who consume the products.

Why? Because products, service ideas and processes are commercially successful when they meet a real - or perceived - need of people. From here the mantra “let’s get in touch with customers” or “let’s hear the voice of the client” emerged. However, the final users often struggle to define what their needs are or to imagine new solutions.

Design Thinking answers this dilemma: Creating a multidisciplinary team to gather information, invest in creative idea production, realize fast prototypes using a set of techniques, and design methods that empathize with the people for whom they are designed.

In this participatory workshop, you will be invited to put yourself in a design thinker's shoes and face a mini-challenge that will lead to the realization of a final prototype. Read the bio of our talented facilitator, Valentina Catena, at the bottom.

Topics

● What Design Thinking is: origins, areas of application, fundamental assumptions and guiding principles

● Phases and Tools of the Design Process: inspiration, ideation, implementation

● Design Mini Challenge: step-by-step exercise from the initial challenge to the final test

What You Will Learn

● A general overview of a design thinking process

● To adopt an empathetic design approach and to approach people's needs

● To learn about the most suitable techniques and tools

The course is a learning-by-doing opportunity for those who deal with innovation in both profit and non-profit sectors, those who work in Communication, Marketing, Human Resources, Research and Development fields, and for start-uppers who intend to design products, services and processes aligned with the aspirations of people for whom they are designed.

Meet the Facilitator

Valentina Catena, Design Thinker, Strategic Facilitator

Valentina Catena deals with research, strategic facilitation, and people training both in profit and nonprofit organizations, companies, and institutions. Her activity is focused on connecting people, listening phases with the co-creation process of new products, and processes or projects that meet everyone's needs.

She is mad for researching with the user and involving all the stakeholders of a project, product, or service in the conversation for whole system change.

She believes that developing the skills of empathic listening and acting as agents of positive change around us is the great challenge of the 21st century.

Valentina collaborates with initiatives and programs concerning organizational learning, training, and development; participatory leadership, multi-stakeholder processes, whole system change, and strategical conversations. She does participatory workshops with companies (Leroy Merlin, Credem, Fastweb and others), institutions, and nonprofit organizations (European Commission, Artisans Union Monza, Municipality of Desio, Citizens for Europe, ASVI, and others).

Valentina graduated in Communication Science in 2005 with a thesis on the ways of interactive use of cinematographic products. Between 2006 and 2010 she lived, worked, and studied in Cardiff, Amsterdam, and New York getting passionate about the fields of online participation, remix culture, and video advocacy.

She moved to Berlin in 2012 to understand more about the world of process consulting and strategic facilitation of collective co-creation spaces. She worked with the Academy of Visionautics to create transformative learning spaces for adults and learning partnership between non-conventional schools. She then attended the Hasso Plattner School of Design Thinking of Potsdam and started her career as a facilitator.
