Designated Safeguarding Lead Initial

This course is for anyone new to the role of Designated Safeguard Lead, or Deputy, and those who support DSL’s such as headteachers, principles and governors with responsibility for safeguarding within their setting. It will provide the tools and information to allow you to perform the role with confidence.

About the trainer

Steve was a police officer for thirty years, spending his last years as Head of Public Protection with responsibility for child abuse investigations, the response to child sexual exploitation, on-line abuse, offender management, domestic abuse and adults at risk across West Mercia and Warwickshire. He led many complex child abuse investigations and was an active member of five local safeguarding children boards. Prior to that, over many years working as an investigator at a number of levels, Steve led and was involved in numerous serious crime investigations, including complex child abuse, ‘honour based’ violence and missing children.

This experience allows him to train with a different and interesting perspective making the training real and relevant by using scenarios and examples which help you to apply the theory.

Since leaving the police Steve has worked for three local safeguarding boards as business manager, helping to introduce new local arrangements. This means Steve’s knowledge is very current and he has an in depth understanding of how safeguarding and child protection systems work and need to be applied. He is also the safeguarding governor at his local school so is in tune with the workings of a school and its safeguarding requirements. He is a qualified trainer in adult education.

The Course

Steve understands that dealing with safeguarding and child protection situations can be daunting, and so within his training focuses on developing learners’ abilities to make informed, balanced and properly recorded decisions in various situations, using national and local guidance and their own experience and knowledge, so developing their confidence in dealing with such situations. Questions and discussion are encouraged as this helps to raise new relevant points and clarify others.

The course will cover;

  • legislation and recognising abuse
  • safeguarding processes and procedures
  • the role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead
  • practical application.

The course also covers KCSIE September 2019 and relevant areas of the new Ofsted inspection framework.

You will be given a pack with resources to help you in your role as a DSL.
