Event description

Description

Any well-appointed midcentury living room had at its center a sleek hi-fi console, accompanied by a stack of albums. These might have included the works of Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley, but they were just as likely to denote a mood, experience or culture: Cocktail Time, Music for a Chinese Dinner at Home, The Perfect Background Music for Your Home Movies, Honeymoon in Hawaii, Strings for a Space Age, or Cairo! The Music of Modern Egypt. Join Janet Borgerson and Jonathan Schroeder, authors of In Designed for Hi-Fi Living, as they rummage through the bargain bins of history to explore how these albums that offered a guide for aspirational Americans who yearned to be modern in postwar consumer culture.

This event is free and complimentary wine will be provided by the MIT Press.
